An Introduction to Miyazaki

Introduction To Miyazaki

Miyazaki is the capital city of Miyazaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu, Japan. Located on the coast and crossed by several rivers, Miyazaki City enjoys scenic views of both ocean and nearby, verdant mountains (1). With one of the warmest climates on the main islands of Japan, resorts, beaches and sports facilities, Miyazaki used to be the top honeymoon spot and a popular destination with domestic travelers until the 1980s (2).

Although Miyazaki is the surf Mecca of Japan, it is not as crowded as the beaches of Shonan or Chiba in the Kanto regions of Japan. The beaches are a bit quieter and less crowded, with world-class surf points off the reefs and beach breaks along the coast of the Pacific Ocean.

Not only is Miyazaki a sort of haven for surfers, but many musicians, artists, athletes and business men and women come from all over Japan to start their new lives here. After the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, many people from the northern regions moved south to Kyushu with a heavy concentration of emigrants to Miyazaki.

To the Japanese, Miyazaki is known as the “Hawaii of Japan” due to the slow and mellow lifestyle, with a strong beach and surf culture along the seaside of Miyazaki.

Miyazaki is well-known for surfing and aquatic sports, golfing, “Jidori” Chicken, fresh fruits and veggies due to the purity of water from the region, shrines and power spots, rich and ancient Japanese folklore and mythology, and not to mention, Miyazaki Mangoes!!
